Message From The Principal

Mr Darren Bishop - Principal

It is my privilege to welcome you to The Excel Academy, one of the highest performing academies in the City. However what truly makes us distinctive is the sense of belonging that The Excel Academy engenders in the students, staff, parents and friends of The Academy. Our students confirm that they are proud to be part of our community and we have established a reputation for high standards but also recognise that care for each individual child is paramount. Parents comment that The Academy is now the ‘school of choice’ and we are over-subscribed each year.

Our ethos is one of ‘Pride and Respect’. We make no excuses for having high standards and we expect support from all of our families in ensuring those standards are achieved. Teamwork underpins success and we believe that ‘everyone can improve’ with the right support and attitude. The relationships between home and The Academy are fundamental to our success. Working in partnership we can ensure that every child enjoys their time at Excel, makes outstanding progress and leaves here as responsible, well-qualified, mature young people, ready to make a valued contribution to society.

We are extremely proud of how are students performed in the examinations in 2018, achieving some of our best results ever! Our results in GCSE Mathematics and English placed us as the best non-selective academy locally. We strive to ensure a curriculum pathway to allow all students to achieve and our creative arts and vocational subjects yet again achieved excellent results too.

Exam achievement is of paramount importance but is not our sole focus. We ‘expect excellence’ in all areas of personal development. Our long tradition of success in the sporting arena continued this year with a huge number of our young sports ‘stars’ winning Town, City and County honours during the year. Our talented young actors, singers and dancers produced outstanding performances at our prestigious Achievement Awards evening, our Sports Awards evening and our Summer production of Annie.

I believe that The Excel Academy is a special place and has many strengths. I am excited by the prospect of the next phase of development. The support The Academy receives as being part of the ‘Alpha Academies Trust’ is excellent and I look forward to working with the students, teachers, governors and families to continue the drive on raising standards.

If you are considering choosing The Excel Academy for your child or would like to come and have a look around, please contact us on 01782 882700
