t Excel we give students in every year group the opportunity to take on voluntary responsibility roles. Students can apply to be part of the Leadership system in each year culminating in becoming a prefect and in Year 11 a Senior Prefect.

Each role has specific whole school objectives and actions to achieve each term. It is integral to our Character Education as it continues to develop our core values. Students represent The Academy in the community and contribute to national charities.

Form Executives are our Student Council. There are two from each form group and they meet regularly with their Head of Year to discuss key issues in The Academy and local community. There are then two senior executives in each year who meet with the Principal and Vice Principal to discuss whole school issues and report back to the student body what actions have been taken.

Students can apply to be part of these leadership groups through Mr Coe or speak to Miss Knight.

The Excel Academy Volunteering and Leadership Structure

The Prefect System at The Excel Academy

At The Excel Academy we encourage all students to learn responsibility and contribute to how The Academy is run. All of our leadership groups are supported by members of the prefect team. We currently have around 150 students in Year 10 and 11 who represent The Academy as a prefect. These are our most inspirational students who set the standard of behaviour and conduct throughout Academy life. They uphold and demonstrate each day our core values of Pride and Respect and help The Academy to run smoothly and effectively.

In the spring term of Year 9, students can apply by application letter to become a prefect. They have to have the support of their Form Tutor and Head of Year and ultimately have excellent standards in the Excel Way. Once selected they will be trained by the current Year 11 Senior Team, ready to take up duties as the GCSE exams begin in May.

In the Spring Term of Year 10, current prefects can apply to become Senior Prefects. Again they are expected to do a written application, then Miss Knight and the Pastoral Team shortlist the students to around 30 applicants. These students will then participate in an intensive selection day at our Business partner Lucideon in Penkhull. They under-take a variety of tasks including Myers Briggs Psychometric questionnaire, presentations, team work tasks and 1-1 interviews with staff from Lucideon. This process gives the students an excellent understanding of what a graduate would undertake if applying for a job and over the last 5 years our students have excelled in many of the tasks. Lucideon then rate the students and give us feedback. From this, we then shortlist for final interviews with Mr Bishop, Miss Knight, the Head of Year and the current Head Boy and Girl.

Finally, we discuss successful applications and form a Senior prefect team. Currently we have 16 Senior prefects. This includes five Deputies who, with the seniors, lead a team of 35 students on a duty day. The Head Boy and Head Girl lead this team and ensure The Academy is safe and students are following the standards.

The Excel Academy continues to be a good school
